Examination and X-Ray

First, Dr. Roo will examine the tooth that requires treatment and will take digital X-rays to view the infection in relation to the root structure and the surrounding bone. This will give him a complete view of what is happening inside the tooth before treatment begins, so there are no surprises along the way.

Anesthesia

Once Dr. Roo has examined your x-rays and explained the plan, he will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. He ensures the area is numb before beginning the procedure. Most patients experience nothing more than mild pressure during the procedure. If dental anxiety is an issue, sedation options are available to help you relax from start to finish.

Removing the Infected Tissue

With the tooth completely numb, Dr. Roo makes a small opening in the top of the tooth to reach the infected tissue inside. He then carefully removes it and cleans out each of the root canals, the narrow passages that run through the roots of the tooth to prepare them for sealing.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

After the infected tissue has been removed, the interior of the tooth is thoroughly flushed out and disinfected to kill off any remaining bacteria. This is the step that prevents the infection from coming back and sets the stage for a successful, long-lasting result.

Sealing the Tooth

After Dr. Roo cleans and shapes the canals, he fills them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and seals them off to prevent bacteria from re-entering. He then places a temporary or permanent filling in the access opening.

Crown Placement

For the most part, a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy will require a dental crown to restore its full strength and functionality. When the pulp is removed, the tooth structure can weaken over time.
